Contrary to popular belief, the Empire Café was not, at any time, a gas station. In the early 1930s Joseph Hollyfield opened his family business, Hollyfield Laundry & Cleaners. The store front occupied what is now the Empire Café and the processing center was across the street.

Hollyfield laundry remained in operation until the mid 70s when Joseph died and the business was shut down. The processing center was turned into an antique mall and the storefront was rented to a handful of different businesses over the years to follow.

It wasn't until a Hollywood film producer came to town for a project and found there wasn't anywhere to get a decent cup of coffee. So he and a partner opened the Empire Café. Recently that producer passed the torch to its current, Texan owner who continues to ensure an excellent cup of coffee is right around the corner.
